Full-Day Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius Tour from Sorrento

Pompeii first, and the extra hour

An early departure with hotel pickup in Sorrento, then the SS145 to Pompeii in about forty minutes. The listing is explicit about why: "By departing early in the morning, we will bypass the traffic and crowds, guaranteeing a priority arrival."

Inside, the guided walk runs two and a half hours — the same length as the half-day coach on this site and half an hour longer than the train tours — and the itinerary names its stops: the Civil Forum, the Temple of Jupiter, the Macellum, the Stabian Baths, the Lupanare, the House of the Faun, the Large Theatre and the Basilica, with the Roman Forum and the Temple of Apollo called out in the description along with the plaster casts.

Then there is an hour of free time, which the itinerary schedules rather than leaving to chance. The listing suggests using it for the shops and cafés around the site; in practice it is enough to walk east towards the amphitheatre and back, or to sit down out of the sun. On a day this long that hour is a real feature.

The operator is candid about conditions: "During peak season Pompeii will be very crowded and there may be a long wait at the main attractions within the site," and the day "operates at a timely pace to ensure that all items on the itinerary are visited." Both are true and neither is usually printed.

The volcano, in thirty minutes of walking

From Pompeii it is about thirty minutes by coach up the volcano road. The vehicle takes you to 1,000 metres, skipping the great majority of the climb, and from there it is a thirty-minute ascent on foot to the crater's edge. The whole Vesuvius stop is scheduled at 1.5 hours up and down.

At the top you can walk a stretch of the rim and photograph the whole Bay of Naples. The listing notes you may come across an official alpine guide who can talk about the volcano's history — may, which is the part worth reading twice.

The difference between a $52 half-day and a $189 full day is Vesuvius, Herculaneum, lunch and hotel pickup, never more time in the ruins. Judge these tours on what they add outside the walls, not on the hours inside them.

The crater ticket at €11.68

The inclusion list reads "Priority access to Pompeii Archaeological Park and Crater of Mt. Vesuvius (€11,68)". The figure is the park's own, and the operator is passing it through rather than marking it up.

The crater ticket, and what €11.68 is made of

Mount Vesuvius path 5, the Gran Cono, costs €10.00 full and €8.00 reduced, and the park sells it online only — "the ticketing service is exclusively carried out online". The €11.68 in this listing is that fare plus the park's own €1.68 booking fee, passed through at cost.

Two rules worth knowing: twenty per cent of each time slot is released one hour before it, so a sold-out day can still admit a walk-up; and the trail closes automatically on an orange or higher Civil Protection weather alert, with unused tickets refunded. The full crater guide is here.

The sentence the operator prints

Under "know before you go", in the operator's own words: "Your guide is not allowed in Vesuvius Park. You will need to climb and descend on your own," followed by "Official park alpine guides are not guaranteed, but you can read the park's information boards or download the park app."

That is an operator telling you, before you pay, that half its headline product is self-guided. It is a park rule rather than a shortcut — the reasons and the alternatives are set out here — but printing it is a choice, and most listings do not make it.

If having the volcano explained is what you want, the day with lunch includes an alpine guide of its own and the small-group van supplies a digital audio guide in five languages.

If the crater closes, you get Herculaneum

The listing states it plainly: if weather conditions change and access to Mount Vesuvius is prohibited, you will be offered a skip-the-line ticket to visit Herculaneum instead. That is a substitution rather than a refund, and it is the better of the two clauses in this comparison — one listing instead refunds the cost of the park entry only and continues with the rest of the day.

Closures are not rare. The trail shuts automatically on any day the regional Civil Protection issues an orange or higher weather alert, and also for heavy rain, high wind and occasional maintenance.

Herculaneum: the ticket and the hours

Herculaneum admission is €16.00 full and €2.00 reduced; the site opens 08:30 to 19:30 with last entry 18:00 from 16 March to 14 October. It is a quarter the size of Pompeii and far better preserved — intact upper storeys, carbonised wood, the arched boat chambers on the ancient shoreline. The Pompeii ticket

"Priority access to Pompeii Archaeological Park" is all the listing says about the grade. The working assumption is the €20 express — no supplement is charged and the suburban villas are never mentioned.

The two grades, and which one this is

Since 12 January 2026 Pompeii sells Pompeii+ at €25.00, which includes the suburban villas, and Pompeii express at €20.00, the ancient city only. Hours, and what they mean for this day

Pompeii opens 09:00 to 19:00 with last entry 17:30 from 16 March to 14 October, and 09:00 to 17:00 with last entry 15:30 from 15 October to 15 March. Entry is free on the first Sunday of each month, which is also the most crowded day of the month — one operator on this site refuses to run tours on it for that reason.

Book it if

You want both the ruins and the volcano, you want collecting from your hotel, and you want the longest possible guided walk at Pompeii within that. You would rather have Herculaneum as a fallback than a partial refund. You are travelling in shoulder season, when the crater closes more often than people expect.

The hour of free time is the quiet argument for this listing over the most-reviewed day, which is the same operator's product from two cities and schedules free time less explicitly.

What the day costs done alone

Book something else if

You want the volcano guided: only the day with lunch includes an alpine guide, and it also climbs first, which is the better order in high summer. You want lunch included, same listing. You want a small group — this is a coach, and the van caps at twenty.

And if the volcano is doubtful for anyone in your party, a half-day at the ruins plus the two-town day makes a better pair of days than one long one.

What the same journey costs without the guide

Eight hours, ruins first

Comfortable shoes, sunglasses, a sun hat and a camera are the listed things to bring; pets are not allowed. The crater has no shade and the ruins have very little.
