Pompeii and Herculaneum Small-Group Excursion from Sorrento

The meeting point is Piazza Angelina Lauro 27, Sorrento, near the fountain, where the driver holds an Askos Tours sign. There is no hotel pickup.

The drive to Pompeii takes about an hour, and the guided walk there runs two hours with a certified archaeologist: the streets, the forums and the baths, and the story of a Roman city stopped mid-sentence. Headsets are supplied for groups larger than six.

The archaeologist matters more here than on a Pompeii-only day. Herculaneum in particular rewards someone who can explain why its upper storeys survived when Pompeii's collapsed, and what a carbonised wooden screen tells you about how the town died. Its reviewers name their guides repeatedly and describe them as passionate rather than merely informed.

Herculaneum after the break

After the stop in the middle the van continues to Herculaneum for two guided hours. It is a quarter the size of Pompeii and far better preserved: intact multi-storey buildings, wooden fittings, frescoes, and the arched boat chambers along the ancient shoreline. One reviewer described seeing both sites and having the differences between them explained clearly as the point of the day, which is exactly right.

Then it is about seventy-five minutes back to Piazza Lauro.

Herculaneum: the ticket and the hours

Herculaneum admission is €16.00 full and €2.00 reduced; the site opens 08:30 to 19:30 with last entry 18:00 from 16 March to 14 October. It is a quarter the size of Pompeii and far better preserved — intact upper storeys, carbonised wood, the arched boat chambers on the ancient shoreline. The difference between a $52 half-day and a $189 full day is Vesuvius, Herculaneum, lunch and hotel pickup, never more time in the ruins. Judge these tours on what they add outside the walls, not on the hours inside them.

"Pompeii Express" and €16.00

The inclusion list reads "Pompeii Express" entry tickets and Herculaneum entry tickets, and the operator prices the second in its own terms: "Entry tickets to Herculaneum cost 16,00 euros per adult."

So you know both grades. Pompeii Express is the €20 ticket — the ancient city, without the suburban villas. Herculaneum's €16 is the full adult rate. Together that is €36 of tickets inside a $134 day.

The two grades, and which one this is

Since 12 January 2026 Pompeii sells Pompeii+ at €25.00, which includes the suburban villas, and Pompeii express at €20.00, the ancient city only. Hours, and what they mean for this day

Pompeii opens 09:00 to 19:00 with last entry 17:30 from 16 March to 14 October, and 09:00 to 17:00 with last entry 15:30 from 15 October to 15 March. Entry is free on the first Sunday of each month, which is also the most crowded day of the month — one operator on this site refuses to run tours on it for that reason.

The fifty minutes at MaxiMall Pompeii

Between the two sites the tour stops for fifty minutes at MaxiMall Pompeii, described in the listing as the biggest shopping mall in the south of Italy, and hands out a personalised discount card and a branded welcome kit.

On a seven-and-a-half-hour day that is roughly a fifth of the touring time spent in a shopping centre. It is stated openly in the listing, so nobody is being misled, and it is the day's lunch stop — there is nowhere else obvious to eat between Pompeii and Ercolano.

Its own reviewers are not unhappy about it. One Australian traveller described the layout of the day — Herculaneum, lunch at a local shopping centre, then Pompeii — as "perfect", with appropriate time at each stop. In August, air conditioning and a chair are worth something.

But if you would rather have those fifty minutes in the ruins, book the coach day with a restaurant lunch instead, or build the day yourself on the train for about €42.

Book it if

You want the smallest group available. Eight passengers in a minivan is a different experience from a coach at both sites, and especially at Herculaneum, where the streets are narrow and a large group blocks them.

You want an archaeologist. Across two sites this technical, the difference between a general guide and a specialist is the difference between a tour and an education.

You want both tickets settled, both named, and no thinking about trains.

Book something else if

You need hotel pickup: this meets at Piazza Lauro, while the coach day with lunch collects from twenty-three named Sorrento hotels. You want lunch included rather than a mall food court: same listing. You want the volcano instead of the second town: the Vesuvius days are compared here.

Also check the luggage note. The operator warns that luggage may not fit the vehicle and recommends a left-luggage office if you are travelling with suitcases on the day — a real consideration if this is your last day in Sorrento. Non-folding strollers are not allowed and the tour is not suitable for wheelchair users or travellers with mobility impairments.

What the day costs done alone
