Collecting the ticket and getting there

You collect your ticket at the tourist office by Sorrento train station before boarding — the operator, Tempio Travel Sorrento, keeps an office there and provides assistance at both the Sorrento and the Pompeii ends.

Then it is the ordinary Circumvesuviana, about forty minutes to Pompei Scavi – Villa dei Misteri, a hundred metres from Porta Marina. The listing describes the whole experience as approximately four hours: two hours of guided sightseeing and about an hour of train travel each way. The line, the fare and the timetable are here.

The two hours inside

The guided walk covers the ruins of the Roman town: the theatres, the famous villas, the public baths, a bakery with its cooking utensils still in place, the Forum, the thermopolia, and the body casts. The listing is straightforward that this is a shared guided tour, not a private one.

A reviewer writing in August described the guide as well organised with a good sense of humour; another in June said simply that you learn much more with a guide than you would notice alone, which is the honest case for the format on a site this large.

Two hours is what every listing here gives you

Guided time inside the walls runs 2 hours to 2.5 hours across every Sorrento listing on this site, whatever it costs. The difference between a $52 half-day and a $189 full day is Vesuvius, Herculaneum, lunch and hotel pickup, never more time in the ruins. Judge these tours on what they add outside the walls, not on the hours inside them.

"Express", stated in the inclusion list

The inclusion list reads "Skip-the-line entrance ticket 'Express'". That is the €20 grade, and naming it is more than seven of the twelve listings compared here manage.

What it means in practice: the ancient city inside the walls, and not the suburban villas — no Villa of the Mysteries, no Villa of Diomedes. Since the guided walk stays inside the walls anyway, nothing is lost during the tour itself; the question only arises if you were planning to add the villas afterwards, and this listing does not promise you an all-day train ticket to do that with. The two grades, and which one this is

Since 12 January 2026 Pompeii sells Pompeii+ at €25.00, which includes the suburban villas, and Pompeii express at €20.00, the ancient city only. The suburban villas can be added on the day for €8, card payment only, at the Herculaneum Gate. No tour from Sorrento includes the villas. The full audit of what each listing buys is here.

Hours, and what they mean for this day

Pompeii opens 09:00 to 19:00 with last entry 17:30 from 16 March to 14 October, and 09:00 to 17:00 with last entry 15:30 from 15 October to 15 March. Entry is free on the first Sunday of each month, which is also the most crowded day of the month — one operator on this site refuses to run tours on it for that reason.

What the same journey costs without the guide

Sorrento to Pompei is fare band AC3 on the Unico Campania scale: €2.80 a single on the Circumvesuviana, €5.60 return, and the EAV L1 train takes 39 to 40 minutes. With the €20 Pompeii express ticket, an independent day comes to about €25.60 — the arithmetic is set out in full here.

Book it if

You want a guide and you want to spend as little as possible on getting one. You are comfortable on a commuter train. You are staying within walking distance of Sorrento station. You would rather the operator told you what ticket you are holding than left you to guess.

It is also the sensible pick for a group where only some people want the guided walk: the others can travel independently on the same train for €2.80 and meet you afterwards.

The transport score, and what to do about it

The listing's own review breakdown gives the guide 4.7, value for money 4.2 and transportation 3.9 — the lowest transport sub-score of the twelve tours compared here.

That is not a reflection on the operator so much as on the Circumvesuviana, which is a working commuter railway with worn carriages and, in the afternoon, standing room. One reviewer on a comparable train tour described standing for forty-five minutes on the way back and did not consider it a serious problem; another simply called the trip from Sorrento easy.

If that would bother you, the answer is a coach day rather than a different train tour: the half-day with hotel pickup puts you in an air-conditioned coach for $92 and gives you an extra half hour with the guide. The Campania Express, the comfortable train, stops running on 1 October 2026.

Book something else if

You want Vesuvius — no train tour reaches it, and the Vesuvius days are here. You want to stay inside after the group leaves, which the $61 train tour promises in writing and this one does not. Or you need hotel pickup, which no train tour offers.

Four hours, start to finish

The whole experience is about four hours: forty minutes of train each way, two hours guided, and the collection and walking at both ends. Comfortable shoes are required and the listing asks for a sunhat and water in summer.
