Full-Day Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius Tour from Naples or Sorrento

Inside, the guided walk runs two and a half hours with headsets, and the itinerary names its stops: the Civil Forum, the Temple of Jupiter, the Macellum, the Stabian Baths, the Lupanare, the House of the Faun, the Large Theatre and the Basilica, with the Roman Forum and the Temple of Apollo called out in the description along with the plaster casts. Free time follows before the coach moves on.

One reviewer's account is worth quoting because it is honest about the constraint: at Pompeii the group was assigned an expert guide who took them round the large site, extremely knowledgeable and open to questions — but "time was a little short due to vastness of site". That is true of every listing in this comparison, none of which guides for more than two and a half hours.

Two hours is what every listing here gives you

Guided time inside the walls runs 2 hours to 2.5 hours across every Sorrento listing on this site, whatever it costs. The difference between a $52 half-day and a $189 full day is Vesuvius, Herculaneum, lunch and hotel pickup, never more time in the ruins. Judge these tours on what they add outside the walls, not on the hours inside them.

The volcano after lunch

From Pompeii the coach climbs the volcano road and takes you to 1,000 metres, skipping the bulk of the ascent. From there it is a thirty-minute climb to the crater's edge on what one reviewer described as a safe volcanic shingle path, with the whole Vesuvius stop scheduled at 1.5 hours.

At the top you can walk a stretch of the rim above the whole Bay of Naples. The listing notes that you may come across an official alpine guide who can talk about the volcano's history — the word may is doing real work in that sentence, and this listing's own ticket section explains why.

€11.68 for the crater, and the Pompeii grade unnamed

The inclusion list reads "Priority access to Pompeii Archaeological Park and Crater of Mt. Vesuvius (€11,68)". The Vesuvius figure is the park's own and is passed through at cost; the Pompeii grade is not named, and the working assumption is the €20 express — the ancient city, without the suburban villas.

The crater ticket, and what €11.68 is made of

Mount Vesuvius path 5, the Gran Cono, costs €10.00 full and €8.00 reduced, and the park sells it online only — "the ticketing service is exclusively carried out online". The €11.68 in this listing is that fare plus the park's own €1.68 booking fee, passed through at cost.

Two rules worth knowing: twenty per cent of each time slot is released one hour before it, so a sold-out day can still admit a walk-up; and the trail closes automatically on an orange or higher Civil Protection weather alert, with unused tickets refunded. The full crater guide is here.

The sentence, again

Under "know before you go" this listing carries the same wording as its sister product: "Your guide is not allowed in Vesuvius Park. You will need to climb and descend on your own," followed by "Official park alpine guides are not guaranteed, but you can read the park's information boards or download the park app."

If the crater closes

"Access to Mount Vesuvius is subject to favorable weather conditions. If weather conditions change unexpectedly on the day of your tour and access is prohibited, you will be offered a skip-the-line ticket to visit Herculaneum."

A second Roman town in place of the volcano is a genuinely good substitution — better than the refund-only clause on one of the other listings here.

Herculaneum: the ticket and the hours

Herculaneum admission is €16.00 full and €2.00 reduced; the site opens 08:30 to 19:30 with last entry 18:00 from 16 March to 14 October. It is a quarter the size of Pompeii and far better preserved — intact upper storeys, carbonised wood, the arched boat chambers on the ancient shoreline. The two grades, and which one this is

Since 12 January 2026 Pompeii sells Pompeii+ at €25.00, which includes the suburban villas, and Pompeii express at €20.00, the ancient city only. The suburban villas can be added on the day for €8, card payment only, at the Herculaneum Gate. No tour from Sorrento includes the villas. The full audit of what each listing buys is here.

Hours, and what they mean for this day

Pompeii opens 09:00 to 19:00 with last entry 17:30 from 16 March to 14 October, and 09:00 to 17:00 with last entry 15:30 from 15 October to 15 March. Entry is free on the first Sunday of each month, which is also the most crowded day of the month — one operator on this site refuses to run tours on it for that reason.

Book it if

You want the largest possible evidence base behind your booking. 4,989 reviews at 4.7 is not a small sample and it is not a new product; the complaints in it are about heat and the size of Pompeii rather than about the operator.

You also want it if your party is split between Naples and Sorrento, because this is the only listing here that runs from both — though everyone still has to join the same coach at the same end.

The booking mistake to avoid

There are six meeting-point options: From Naples: Group Tour in English / Spanish / French and From Sorrento: Group Tour in English / Spanish / French.

That is six lines in a dropdown, three of which start your day in a city eighty minutes from where you are sleeping. The drop-off list has the same trap in reverse: four locations including Sorrento, Naples and Starhotel Terminus opposite Napoli Centrale.

Check the option name in your basket before you pay, and check your drop-off before the coach leaves Vesuvius. It is the single most likely way to have a bad day on this listing.

What the day costs done alone

The ruins on their own from Sorrento come to about €25.60: €5.60 for the Circumvesuviana return and €20 for the Pompeii express ticket. That is the number every listing on this site is measured against, and the full comparison is here.

Book something else if

You want the volcano guided: the day with lunch includes an alpine guide and climbs first, which is the better order in high summer. You want lunch included: same listing. You want a small group: this is a coach, and the twenty-seat van is the alternative. Or you want a Sorrento-only product with no chance of the wrong city, which is the full-day coach — the same shape of day at $145.

And if the ruins alone are enough, a half-day costs $52 to $92 and doing it yourself is about €25.60.

What the same journey costs without the guide
