Train from Sorrento to Pompeii: Fare, Timetable and the Right Stop

Fare band AC3: €2.80 single, €5.60 return

Unico Campania, the consortium that sets fares across Campania, puts the Sorrento to Pompei journey in band AC3. Within that band a corsa semplice aziendale — a single ticket valid on one operator's services, which for this journey means EAV's Circumvesuviana — costs €2.80. A corsa semplice integrata, valid across operators, costs €3.50. If you are simply riding the Circumvesuviana there and back, you want two of the €2.80 tickets, so €5.60.

For comparison, a monthly pass in the same band is €50.60 on EAV alone and €64.40 integrated, which is worth knowing only if you are staying a while.

The two figures you will have read elsewhere are both real fares, just not this one. €2.60 is band AC2, one zone short. €3.30 is band NA3 — the fare from Naples to Pompei, a different origin on a different part of the scale. A guide written in Naples and adapted for Sorrento carries that number south, where it does not belong.

Buying it, and validating it

Tickets are sold at the ticket office and the machines inside the Sorrento terminus, and at tobacconists and bars near the station. Paper tickets carry a magnetic stripe and must be inserted into the yellow validation boxes on the platform before you board. An unvalidated ticket is treated as no ticket at all, whatever you paid for it, and the on-train penalty is not small.

There is no advantage to buying a return in advance: two singles cost the same and give you the freedom to come back whenever you like. The exception is a guided tour that hands you the ticket, which several of the operators on this site do.

Thirty-nine minutes, not thirty

Every service on the L1 sheet covers Sorrento to Pompei Scavi – Villa dei Misteri in 39 or 40 minutes, in both directions, with no change. Trains run roughly every 36 minutes. The first leaves Sorrento at 05:30; the last arrival back in Sorrento is 23:18.

The "about 30 minutes" figure that circulates is not on any column of the timetable. Plan on forty, and add ten minutes at each end for the walk to the platform and the walk to the gate.

The departures worth knowing

Two trains matter more than the rest. The 08:14 puts you at Pompei Scavi at 08:53, seven minutes before the park opens at 09:00 and roughly ninety minutes before the first coach groups arrive from Sorrento and Naples. The 18:13 back reaches Sorrento at 18:53, comfortably after the summer last entry of 17:30 and before the park closes at 19:00.

Taken together that pair gives you about nine hours inside the walls for €5.60 of train. No tour on this site offers more than two and a half guided hours, whatever it costs.

The one you want

Pompei Scavi – Villa dei Misteri is the stop on the Napoli–Sorrento line. It is about a hundred metres from Porta Marina and from the Piazza Esedra entrance, both of which open onto the western end of the excavated city. Walk out of the station, turn right, and the ticket office is in front of you.

This is where the guided train tours meet their guides too: one of them meets on the first floor of the red Circumvesuviana station building, a hundred metres from Porta Marina Superiore.

The two you do not

Pompei Santuario is on the Napoli–Poggiomarino line. It serves the Piazza Anfiteatro entrance at the far eastern end of the site, next to the amphitheatre — a legitimate way in, but a twenty-minute walk through the ruins from where the guided routes start, and not reachable from Sorrento without going all the way to Naples first.

Pompei is the Trenitalia station on the Napoli–Salerno main line, and the Pompei Link bus covers the fifteen minutes from there to the park gate for €1.50. That is a useful route from Naples. From Sorrento it is not a route at all.

It stops on 1 October 2026

EAV announced in mid-August 2026 that the Campania Express is suspended from 1 October 2026, until further notice, so that its rolling stock can go back onto commuter Circumvesuviana runs. On the current timetable the affected services are marked EXP: the 10:20, 13:20, 16:20 and 19:20 out of Sorrento, and the 09:02, 12:02, 15:02 and 18:02 through Pompei Scavi.

On the Sorrento to Pompeii stretch specifically, the loss is smaller than it sounds: the ordinary train covers the same distance in the same forty minutes, costs €2.80 instead of the Express supplement, and runs roughly every 36 minutes rather than eight times a day. What you give up is the guaranteed seat and the air conditioning, which in August is not nothing.

€25.60 against $52 to $92

Alone, the day is €5.60 of train and a €20 Pompeii express ticket: about €25.60. The cheapest guided version is $52 and the most expensive train-based one is $81; the coach half-day with hotel pickup is $92.

So the guide costs roughly €20 to €48. For a first visit that is, by most measures, cheap: Pompeii is 66 hectares of largely unlabelled ruins, and two hours of a certified guide is the difference between seeing a bakery and understanding one. What it does not buy is more time — every listing here guides for two to two and a half hours, whatever the price.

The two that let you stay

If you take a guided train tour, the detail worth paying attention to is whether your train ticket stays valid after the group turns round. On the €61 tour and the €81 one it does, and both listings say so plainly: you keep walking, and you come back on whichever train suits you.
