Pompeii Half-Day Guided Tour from Sorrento with Priority Access

The early departure, and why it exists

The listing sells the early start explicitly: "Beat the crowds with an early departure and make the most of your day." In practice that means reaching Porta Marina at or before opening, walking the Forum while it is still cool and comparatively empty, and being back on the coach before the middle of the day.

Two of its own reviewers describe exactly that happening. One wrote that the group met on time in the square, was handed headsets, arrived in Pompeii before it opened with time for drinks and snacks, and was inside as soon as the gates opened, meaning the site was fairly quiet initially — adding that the early start was well worth it as it got busier and hotter as the day went on.

The coach is air-conditioned and the drive is forty minutes each way along the SS145. That forty-minute figure belongs to an early road; in July and August the same drive later in the morning is slower, which is another reason the tour leaves when it does.

The eight named stops

The itinerary lists what you will actually see, which is unusual enough to be worth reproducing: the Civil Forum, the Temple of Jupiter, the Macellum, the Stabian Baths, the Lupanare, the House of the Faun, the Large Theatre and the Basilica. The description adds a thermopolium and a pistrinum — a street-food counter and a bakery with its millstones and ovens — and the plaster casts.

That is the spine of the city and it is a genuinely full 2.5 hours. Headsets are supplied for groups of eight or more, so you can fall behind to take a photograph without losing the commentary. The guide may be multilingual, and the listing says the departure times and locations may vary.

Two hours is what every listing here gives you

Guided time inside the walls runs 2 hours to 2.5 hours across every Sorrento listing on this site, whatever it costs. The difference between a $52 half-day and a $189 full day is Vesuvius, Herculaneum, lunch and hotel pickup, never more time in the ruins. Judge these tours on what they add outside the walls, not on the hours inside them.

"Priority Access", and what that means

The inclusion list reads "Priority Access: skip the line and dive straight into Pompeii ruins". It does not say which of the two grades that ticket is.

Since the express ticket is €20 and Pompeii+ is €25, and this listing charges no supplement and never mentions the suburban villas, the working assumption is the €20 express grade. That covers everything on its own itinerary — all eight named stops are inside the walls — so nothing about the guided walk is affected.

What it does mean is that the Villa of the Mysteries is not on your ticket, and unlike the train tours this is a coach day: the coach leaves when it leaves, so there is no staying behind to pay the €8 supplement at the Herculaneum Gate. If the villa matters, go independently with a Pompeii+ ticket.

The two grades, and which one this is

Since 12 January 2026 Pompeii sells Pompeii+ at €25.00, which includes the suburban villas, and Pompeii express at €20.00, the ancient city only. The suburban villas can be added on the day for €8, card payment only, at the Herculaneum Gate. No tour from Sorrento includes the villas. The full audit of what each listing buys is here.

Hours, and what they mean for this day

Pompeii opens 09:00 to 19:00 with last entry 17:30 from 16 March to 14 October, and 09:00 to 17:00 with last entry 15:30 from 15 October to 15 March. Entry is free on the first Sunday of each month, which is also the most crowded day of the month — one operator on this site refuses to run tours on it for that reason.

Book it if

You want collecting from your hotel. You want the longest guided walk available in a half-day — 2.5 hours against the train tours' two. You are travelling with someone who would find a crowded commuter train hard work, or with luggage, or in August.

It is also the pick for anyone staying outside the centre of Sorrento, where walking to the Circumvesuviana terminus is a taxi ride rather than a stroll. The train tours have no pickup at all and say so in their own listings.

What the same journey costs without the guide

Sorrento to Pompei is fare band AC3 on the Unico Campania scale: €2.80 a single on the Circumvesuviana, €5.60 return, and the EAV L1 train takes 39 to 40 minutes. With the €20 Pompeii express ticket, an independent day comes to about €25.60 — the arithmetic is set out in full here.

Book something else if
