Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius Tour with Transfers from Sorrento

The meeting point is beside the fountain in Piazza Angelina Lauro, Sorrento, where the operator's representative holds an Askos Tours sign. There is no hotel pickup; the square is central and easy to reach on foot from most of the town.

The drive to Pompeii takes about an hour by minivan or minibus. At the site, an English-speaking guide walks you for two hours through the ruins — the buildings, the frescoes and the artefacts, and the daily life of the people who lived there — followed by a thirty-minute break before the vehicle moves on.

Two hours is the standard across this comparison, and here it comes with a maximum of twenty people rather than a coachload.

Two hours is what every listing here gives you

Guided time inside the walls runs 2 hours to 2.5 hours across every Sorrento listing on this site, whatever it costs. The difference between a $52 half-day and a $189 full day is Vesuvius, Herculaneum, lunch and hotel pickup, never more time in the ruins. Judge these tours on what they add outside the walls, not on the hours inside them.

Vesuvius, with something in your ear

From Pompeii it is twenty-five minutes up the volcano road. The Vesuvius stop is scheduled at 1.5 hours, with an optional ten-minute photo stop, and the ascent from the car park to the crater is the usual thirty minutes on loose cinder.

What is different is the commentary. Because the park does not permit tour guides on path 5, this operator supplies a digital audio guide available in English, French, Spanish, Italian and German and says so in the inclusion list. You walk up with the volcano being explained to you, which is more than the coach days manage.

The return leg is seventy minutes back to Piazza Lauro, longer than the outward run because of afternoon traffic on the SS145.

"Pompeii Express entry ticket"

The inclusion list says "Pompeii Express entry ticket" — one of the few listings compared on this site that names the grade rather than saying "skip-the-line" and stopping. It also includes the "Mount Vesuvius entry ticket (11,68 euros/adult)", priced.

Express is the €20 grade: the ancient city inside the walls, and not the suburban villas. On a seven-hour day with two sites in it there would be no time for the Villa of the Mysteries anyway, but it is better to be told.

The two grades, and which one this is

Since 12 January 2026 Pompeii sells Pompeii+ at €25.00, which includes the suburban villas, and Pompeii express at €20.00, the ancient city only. The suburban villas can be added on the day for €8, card payment only, at the Herculaneum Gate. No tour from Sorrento includes the villas. The full audit of what each listing buys is here.

The crater ticket, and what €11.68 is made of

Mount Vesuvius path 5, the Gran Cono, costs €10.00 full and €8.00 reduced, and the park sells it online only — "the ticketing service is exclusively carried out online". The €11.68 in this listing is that fare plus the park's own €1.68 booking fee, passed through at cost.

Two rules worth knowing: twenty per cent of each time slot is released one hour before it, so a sold-out day can still admit a walk-up; and the trail closes automatically on an orange or higher Civil Protection weather alert, with unused tickets refunded. The full crater guide is here.

The audio guide is the honest answer

Tour guides are not permitted on the Vesuvius crater path, and official park alpine guides are not guaranteed to be present. Most listings deal with this by saying nothing; some say it outright and leave you to the park's own information boards.

This one does something different: it puts the audio guide in the inclusion list as a named feature. That is not a workaround so much as an acknowledgement — the operator has read the rule, accepted it, and bought a product that works inside it. If the crater closes

"In case Mount Vesuvius closes due to force majeure events (bad weather conditions, wildfires), a visit of Herculaneum will be offered as an alternative."

Wildfires are named alongside weather, which is a realistic addition on this mountain in August. A second Roman town in place of the volcano is the better substitution — one listing here refunds the €11.68 and leaves you with the afternoon.

Herculaneum: the ticket and the hours

Herculaneum admission is €16.00 full and €2.00 reduced; the site opens 08:30 to 19:30 with last entry 18:00 from 16 March to 14 October. It is a quarter the size of Pompeii and far better preserved — intact upper storeys, carbonised wood, the arched boat chambers on the ancient shoreline. Hours, and what they mean for this day

Pompeii opens 09:00 to 19:00 with last entry 17:30 from 16 March to 14 October, and 09:00 to 17:00 with last entry 15:30 from 15 October to 15 March. Entry is free on the first Sunday of each month, which is also the most crowded day of the month — one operator on this site refuses to run tours on it for that reason.

Book it if

You want a small group. Twenty is the stated maximum and the vehicle is a minivan or minibus, which changes the character of both sites — you are not queuing behind a coachload at the ticket gate or straining to hear across forty people.

You also want it if the audio guide matters to you. Standing at the rim of an active volcano with nothing but a signboard is a waste of the walk up, and this is the cheaper of the listings here that address that.

At $122 it undercuts the full-day coach by $23 and the two big coach days by $11, with a smaller group than either.

What the day costs done alone

The ruins on their own from Sorrento come to about €25.60: €5.60 for the Circumvesuviana return and €20 for the Pompeii express ticket. That is the number every listing on this site is measured against, and the full comparison is here.

Book something else if

You want a large review base: this listing has 36 reviews, against 4,989 on the most-reviewed day and 2,174 on the day with lunch. The 4.5 rating is good and its recent reviews are strong, but it is a small sample.

You also want something else if you need hotel pickup — this meets at Piazza Lauro — or if anyone in your party is under six, has mobility impairments or a pre-existing medical condition, all of which the listing excludes. Baby strollers, mobility scooters and electric wheelchairs are not allowed on the vehicle.

And if you want a human guide on the mountain rather than a recording, that is the day with lunch, which is the only listing here with an alpine guide included.

What the same journey costs without the guide

Seven hours, ruins first

Passport or ID card, comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes are the listed requirements; sunglasses, sunscreen, water and a raincoat are recommended. The activity runs whatever the weather as long as both sites are open to the public.
