Pompeii and Vesuvius Guided Tour with Lunch from Sorrento

Vesuvius first, at 1,000 metres

The day starts at the entrance to Parcheggio Comunale Achille Lauro on Corso Filangieri in Sorrento, where the tour leader meets you. The bus goes straight to Mount Vesuvius and climbs to about 1,000 metres, where the road ends.

From there the crater walk is roughly an hour and a half including the ascent, a stretch of the rim and the way down. One of the listing's own reviewers described it precisely: a 1.5-hour stop with a suggested thirty minutes to the top, less if you are reasonably fit; a large crater with visible steam; about a third of the rim walkable; and — a detail nobody expects — souvenirs and cold drinks available at the summit. The same reviewer's advice was to do Vesuvius in the morning on hot days, which is exactly what this itinerary does.

The views run the full length of the Bay of Naples. The surface underfoot is loose volcanic cinder and there is no shade at all.

Lunch on the slopes, then the ruins

Lunch is a Neapolitan pizza at a pizzeria on the slopes of the volcano, about forty-five minutes, and it is included in the price rather than sold as an option. One reviewer travelling gluten-free reported being given gnocchi instead without fuss.

Then the bus goes down to the Pompeii Archaeological Park for two guided hours: the Forum, the Stabian Baths, a thermopolium, the Lupanare, the frescoes and mosaics, and the streets frozen by the eruption of 79 AD. The itinerary names the Thermopolium, the Lupanare, the Foro Civile and the Terme Stabiane specifically.

Because the ruins come last, the walk happens in the afternoon — later than every other listing here, and in high summer that is the hotter half of the day inside the walls. The trade for that is a cooler volcano, which most people would take.

Two hours is what every listing here gives you

Guided time inside the walls runs 2 hours to 2.5 hours across every Sorrento listing on this site, whatever it costs. The difference between a $52 half-day and a $189 full day is Vesuvius, Herculaneum, lunch and hotel pickup, never more time in the ruins. Judge these tours on what they add outside the walls, not on the hours inside them.

The crater ticket, included and explained

The listing states that the Vesuvius National Park entry ticket at €11.68 per person is included, and that the alpine guide is included as well. That is unusual on both counts.

The crater ticket, and what €11.68 is made of

Mount Vesuvius path 5, the Gran Cono, costs €10.00 full and €8.00 reduced, and the park sells it online only — "the ticketing service is exclusively carried out online". The €11.68 in this listing is that fare plus the park's own €1.68 booking fee, passed through at cost.

Two rules worth knowing: twenty per cent of each time slot is released one hour before it, so a sold-out day can still admit a walk-up; and the trail closes automatically on an orange or higher Civil Protection weather alert, with unused tickets refunded. The full crater guide is here.

Who is allowed to guide you on the volcano

Nobody from the tour. Tour guides are not permitted on the Vesuvius crater path, and official park alpine guides are not guaranteed to be there — so a guided Pompeii and Vesuvius day is guided at Pompeii and self-guided on the volcano. It is a park rule, not an operator's shortcut, and two of the listings compared here state it in writing.

Only the day with lunch includes an alpine guide of its own; the small-group van supplies a digital audio guide in five languages instead.

The Pompeii ticket

The inclusion list says only "Pompeii entry ticket" and does not name the grade. The working assumption is the €20 express — the ancient city, without the suburban villas — because the listing charges no supplement and never mentions them.

On a day this long that is a theoretical loss rather than a practical one: with two guided hours in the afternoon there is no time to walk out to the Villa of the Mysteries anyway.

The two grades, and which one this is

Since 12 January 2026 Pompeii sells Pompeii+ at €25.00, which includes the suburban villas, and Pompeii express at €20.00, the ancient city only. Hours, and what they mean for this day

Pompeii opens 09:00 to 19:00 with last entry 17:30 from 16 March to 14 October, and 09:00 to 17:00 with last entry 15:30 from 15 October to 15 March. Entry is free on the first Sunday of each month, which is also the most crowded day of the month — one operator on this site refuses to run tours on it for that reason.

Book it if

You want the volcano explained by somebody qualified rather than by a signboard. You are travelling in July or August and would rather climb in the morning. You want lunch settled rather than a scramble for a sandwich. You want the largest review base of any Vesuvius day from Sorrento bar one — 2,174 at 4.8.

The alpine guide is worth restating, because it is genuinely rare: the other coach days tell you in writing that their guide may not enter the park, and the small-group van substitutes a digital audio guide.

What the day costs done alone

The ruins on their own from Sorrento come to about €25.60: €5.60 for the Circumvesuviana return and €20 for the Pompeii express ticket. That is the number every listing on this site is measured against, and the full comparison is here.

Book something else if

You want Pompeii in the morning: the full-day coach and the most-reviewed day both do the ruins first and the volcano after lunch. You need hotel pickup, which this one does not include but those two do. You want a small group, which is the twenty-seat van. Or you only want the ruins, in which case a half-day at $52 to $92 does that and about €25.60 does it alone.

The listing gives no weather clause of its own, so if the crater closes on your day you are relying on the operator's discretion rather than a stated substitution — two of the other listings promise Herculaneum instead.

Nine hours, volcano first

Passport or ID card, comfortable shoes and a sun hat are all listed as things to bring. The crater is exposed and the ruins have almost no shade, so a hat is doing double duty.
