Herculaneum Skip-the-Line Guided Tour from Sorrento

Sorrento station, then Ercolano

The tour meets at the Circumvesuviana station in Sorrento and travels to Herculaneum by express train or air-conditioned minibus, about an hour, followed by a ten-minute walk down to the site.

That walk is worth mentioning because it sets up the visit: the street from Ercolano Scavi station runs downhill and ends at a terrace looking straight into the excavation, twenty metres below the modern town. You see the whole site at once before you enter it, which is something Pompeii never gives you.

Two hours with a regional guide

Entry is skip-the-line and the guided tour runs two hours with an official Campania Region guide — a licensed qualification rather than an operator's job title — and headsets for all participants.

What you see is the reason to come. Herculaneum was sealed by a pyroclastic surge rather than buried in falling pumice, so its wood carbonised instead of burning: door frames, roof beams, a screen, a bed. Upper storeys survive intact. Along the old shoreline the arched boat chambers hold the remains of more than three hundred people who died waiting for a rescue that never came.

One reviewer who had visited Pompeii a few days earlier described Herculaneum as not at all crowded and much more intimate, with more complete ruins and easy to enjoy at leisure — and added that the small museums are a treat. Another praised a guide who found shade to talk in on a very hot day, which at a site this deep is a real skill.

Herculaneum: the ticket and the hours

Herculaneum admission is €16.00 full and €2.00 reduced; the site opens 08:30 to 19:30 with last entry 18:00 from 16 March to 14 October. It is a quarter the size of Pompeii and far better preserved — intact upper storeys, carbonised wood, the arched boat chambers on the ancient shoreline. The express train stops on 1 October 2026

The inclusion list reads "Round-trip transportation by express train or air-conditioned minibus". The express train is the Campania Express, EAV's limited-stop tourist service between Naples and Sorrento calling at Ercolano Scavi and Pompei Scavi.

EAV announced in mid-August 2026 that the Campania Express is suspended from 1 October 2026, until further notice, moving its rolling stock back onto ordinary commuter runs. Eight services a day disappear from the timetable.

So for any date after 30 September, the "or air-conditioned minibus" half of that sentence is the operative one. That is not a downgrade — a minibus door to door beats a train plus a walk for most people, and one reviewer said exactly that, calling the minibus much better than waiting in the heat for a train — but it is not what the listing implies. Doing the same journey yourself

Ercolano Scavi is on the ordinary Circumvesuviana, about twenty-five minutes beyond Pompei Scavi on the same EAV line L1, roughly an hour from Sorrento with no change. The fare is a little more than the €2.80 Sorrento–Pompei band AC3 single, and trains run about every 36 minutes.

So the independent version of this day is a €16 ticket and roughly €7 of train: about €23. The $110 here buys the guide, the headsets, the skip-the-line entry and not having to think about a timetable. The fare and the line are set out here.

Herculaneum included, Pompeii optional

The inclusion list covers a skip-the-line entrance ticket to Herculaneum — the €16 full adult rate — and a two-hour English guided tour.

Pompeii entry is not included unless you select the Herculaneum & Pompeii option, which the listing offers on the same page. If you take it, you are buying a long day: two archaeological sites, two tickets and about two hours of travel, for which the eight-seat minivan day or the coach day with lunch may be the better-built product.

The two grades, and which one this is

Since 12 January 2026 Pompeii sells Pompeii+ at €25.00, which includes the suburban villas, and Pompeii express at €20.00, the ancient city only. Hours, and what they mean for this day

Pompeii opens 09:00 to 19:00 with last entry 17:30 from 16 March to 14 October, and 09:00 to 17:00 with last entry 15:30 from 15 October to 15 March. Entry is free on the first Sunday of each month, which is also the most crowded day of the month — one operator on this site refuses to run tours on it for that reason.

Book it if

You have seen Pompeii, on this trip or another one, and want the town that explains it. You want a licensed regional guide and headsets. You would rather spend two hours understanding four hectares than four hours skimming seventy.

It is also the sensible choice for a hot day. Herculaneum is compact, partly shaded by the walls of the excavation and the modern town above it, and — as its reviewers keep saying — nothing like as crowded as Pompeii.

At $110 it is not cheap for a half-day, and the independent version is about €23. What you are buying is a specialist, on a site where almost nothing is labelled in depth.

Book something else if

This is your only day and you have not seen Pompeii: go to Pompeii. A guided half-day there starts at $52 and doing it alone is about €25.60.

You want both towns in one day with a single guide: the small-group minivan at $134 or the coach day with lunch at $189 are built for that, rather than bolted together from an option.

What the same journey costs without the guide

Half a day at the quieter town

A passport or ID card is required. The site is deep, the descent into it is on ramps and steps, and the walk from the station is ten minutes downhill and ten minutes back up at the end.
