Pompeii and Herculaneum Guided Tour with Lunch from Sorrento

Twenty-three hotel doors

The listing names its pickup points rather than describing a zone, and there are twenty-three of them — from the Belair and the Hotel Rivage to the Grand Hotel Aminta, the Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria's neighbours on the cliff, the Maison la Minervetta and the Hotel Bristol, with the Tourist Bus Parking as a catch-all. The same twenty-three serve as drop-off points at the end.

That is unusual. Most tours from Sorrento either meet at the station, meet in a square, or offer a vague "hotel pickup" whose reality is a nearby corner. This one prints the list, which means you can check your hotel before you book rather than after.

On a day with two archaeological sites and eight hours in it, being collected and returned at your own door is worth real money — and on this listing it is a large part of the difference between $189 and the $134 charged by the minivan day.

Pompeii, lunch, Herculaneum

The coach reaches Pompeii in about forty-five minutes along the SS145, with live commentary on the way. The guided walk there runs two hours: the original Roman streets, the Forum at the heart of the city's political and social life, and the houses, temples and public buildings that survived.

Then a forty-five-minute light lunch at a local restaurant — a proper sit-down rather than a food court — before the coach continues to Herculaneum for two hours. There the appeal is preservation: intact multi-storey buildings, wooden structures, frescoes that show Roman domestic life at close range.

Back to Sorrento in about forty-five minutes, to the same twenty-three doors.

Herculaneum: the ticket and the hours

Herculaneum admission is €16.00 full and €2.00 reduced; the site opens 08:30 to 19:30 with last entry 18:00 from 16 March to 14 October. It is a quarter the size of Pompeii and far better preserved — intact upper storeys, carbonised wood, the arched boat chambers on the ancient shoreline. Two hours is what every listing here gives you

Guided time inside the walls runs 2 hours to 2.5 hours across every Sorrento listing on this site, whatever it costs. The difference between a $52 half-day and a $189 full day is Vesuvius, Herculaneum, lunch and hotel pickup, never more time in the ruins. Judge these tours on what they add outside the walls, not on the hours inside them.

"Entrance fee", twice

The inclusion list covers "Entrance fee – Pompeii Archaeological Park" and "Entrance fee – Herculaneum Archaeological Park". Herculaneum has a single adult rate of €16, so that one is unambiguous.

Pompeii does not. The listing does not name the grade, and since it charges no supplement and never mentions the suburban villas, the working assumption is the €20 express — the ancient city, without the Villa of the Mysteries. That puts it with the listings on this site that leave the question open rather than those that answer it.

On a day with two sites and eight hours in it the villas were never on the itinerary anyway, so nothing practical is lost. But at $189 it would have cost the operator nothing to say.

The two grades, and which one this is

Since 12 January 2026 Pompeii sells Pompeii+ at €25.00, which includes the suburban villas, and Pompeii express at €20.00, the ancient city only. Hours, and what they mean for this day

Pompeii opens 09:00 to 19:00 with last entry 17:30 from 16 March to 14 October, and 09:00 to 17:00 with last entry 15:30 from 15 October to 15 March. Entry is free on the first Sunday of each month, which is also the most crowded day of the month — one operator on this site refuses to run tours on it for that reason.

Book it if

Your hotel is on the list of twenty-three and you would rather be collected than walk to a square at eight in the morning. You are travelling with anyone for whom the logistics of a day like this are the hard part rather than the walking. You want lunch to be a table and a chair rather than a decision.

It is also the least demanding of the two-site days: a coach rather than a minivan, live commentary on the road, headsets at both sites, and no train, no station, no timetable at any point.

What the day costs done alone

The ruins on their own from Sorrento come to about €25.60: €5.60 for the Circumvesuviana return and €20 for the Pompeii express ticket. That is the number every listing on this site is measured against, and the full comparison is here.

Book something else if

You want the smallest group or a specialist guide: the eight-seat minivan day at $134 caps at eight passengers and supplies a certified archaeologist rather than a general guide, and names its Pompeii ticket grade. That is the better-guided version of the same itinerary for $55 less, and its trade-off is fifty minutes at a shopping centre instead of a restaurant lunch.

You want a large review base: this listing has 13 reviews. They are warm — one described the guide as very knowledgeable and funny and the tour length as ideal on a hot day, another called the lunch tasty and plentiful and said they were glad to have chosen a guided tour rather than going alone — but thirteen is a small sample against 395 on the minivan day and 4,989 on the most-reviewed Vesuvius day.

You are travelling with anyone the listing excludes: it is not suitable for wheelchair users, travellers with mobility impairments, pre-existing medical conditions or motion sickness, and unaccompanied minors are not accepted. No food, alcohol or smoking is allowed in the vehicle.

Eight hours, door to door

Comfortable shoes are required and the listing warns that the tour involves walking on uneven surfaces at both sites. A hat and sunscreen are on its own list; there is little shade at Pompeii and none on the terraces at Herculaneum.
